----   For Immediate Release   ----

Transgender Pastor Honored by the Dalai Lama to be Installed

Pastor Megan Rohrer, who will be installed at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church this Saturday, will receive an honorable mention as an Unsung Hero of Compassion by His Holiness the Dali Lama, who will be in San Francisco for the event, being held by Wisdom in Action, a Bay Area nonprofit.

"I am honored to be the pastor of such a welcoming congregation," Pastor Megan Rohrer remarked, "truly everyone is welcome at Grace Lutheran."

On February 22, 2014 Pastor Megan Rohrer, the first openly transgender pastor ordained in the Lutheran church, will be installed at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in San Francisco’s Sunset District.  This service is a part of the increasing opportunity that is now available for pastors since the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted in 2009 to allow openly gay and lesbian pastors to serve openly.

Serving the homeless in San Francisco as the Executive Director of the Welcome Ministry, Pastor Megan was one the first seven openly gay and transgender pastors brought into the ELCA in 2010.    At Saturday’s Beatle’s Mass and Installation, Pastor Megan will become the first openly transgender pastor to lead an ELCA congregation.

“We think Pastor Megan has the gifts we need to help our congregation grow,” said Sally Ann Ryan, counsel president of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is an ELCA congregation that has been worshiping in San Francisco’s Sunset District since 1940.  All are welcome to our services every Sunday at 10 am.
